About IPMS
The LNDS Identifier-matching Pseudonym Service (IPMS) is a secure, on-demand service that helps you pseudonymise personal data for research, innovation, and collaboration while protecting individual privacy.
The IPMS Portal is your interface to IPMS. You use it to manage projects, collaborate with organisations, and generate authentication tokens that enable you to pseudonymise data through INCERT, the backend pseudonymisation system.
What is pseudonymisation?
According to GDPR Article 4(5), pseudonymisation is:
The processing of personal data in such a manner that the data can no longer be attributed to a specific data subject without the use of additional information, provided that such additional information is kept separately and is subject to technical and organisational measures to ensure that the personal data are not attributed to an identified or identifiable natural person.
In simpler terms, pseudonymisation is the process of replacing personal identifiers in your data with pseudonyms (like random codes or tokens). This way, you can share and collaborate on data without revealing the identities of the individuals involved.
Examples of personal identifiers IPMS can pseudonymise:
- Names and ID numbers (e.g., social security numbers, patient IDs)
- Contact details (e.g., email addresses, phone numbers)
- Identifying attribute combinations (e.g., date of birth + postal code + gender)
- Biometric data (e.g., fingerprints, facial recognition)
- Genetic data
Who is the IPMS Portal for?
IPMS is designed for data holders who need to share personal data for specific purposes—research, innovation, policymaking, or other legitimate activities—but cannot disclose actual personal identifiers.
You might be:
- A healthcare institution sharing clinical data for research
- A public authority conducting policy or service research
- An academic institution collaborating on cross-border studies
- Any data holder reusing collected data for a new legitimate purpose
IPMS offers a secure, compliant way to pseudonymise data, enabling you to share insights while protecting privacy.
Why use IPMS?
IPMS helps you balance two critical requirements:
- Protect privacy: Meet GDPR requirements and safeguard individual identities
- Enable collaboration: Share data securely with partners while maintaining its analytical value
With IPMS, you can comply with data protection regulations while gaining meaningful insights from your data through secure collaboration.
